Irrigation for Hedges and Planting Rows
Watering Hedges with a Soaker Hose
Whether you have a newly planted hedge or a long property boundary, a CS Soaker Hose releases water close to the soil along the plants. Learn how to choose the right product line, divide longer hedges into irrigation runs and correctly account for pressure and water flow.
Water Supply Close to the Soil
Why Is a Soaker Hose Useful for Hedges?
Hedges need sufficient moisture in the root zone, especially during establishment and dry periods. The CS Soaker Hose releases water through its porous hose wall along the planting row. This distributes less water onto leaves, paths or unplanted areas than widespread sprinkler irrigation.
How far the water spreads through the soil depends on soil type, hose layout, operating pressure and irrigation duration. Therefore, check the soil moisture at several points along the hedge after installation.
CS Product Lines
Which CS Soaker Hose Is Right for Your Hedge?
In addition to hedge length, the most important factors when choosing a product are the water source, available operating pressure, water flow, supply line and installation method.
For Many Private Garden Hedges
CS Soaker Hose Premium
For hedges, flower borders and longer planting rows with a suitable pressure-regulated water supply.
Up to 75 m per run with straight installation. Shorter recommended lengths apply to winding or tightly curved layouts.
Discover PremiumFor Long and Extensive Installations
CS Soaker Hose Profi
For longer, straight irrigation runs and larger systems, provided the water supply and supply lines are appropriately designed.
Up to 100 m per run with straight installation. Curves, branches and elevation differences require a separate assessment of the system design.
Discover ProfiSpecial Case: Gravity-Fed Water Supply
CS Soaker Hose Pressureless
For suitable hedge sections supplied by an elevated rain barrel or another suitable water storage container.
Up to 25 m straight; up to 50 m of actual installed hose length in a circular layout. Connect the water supply at one end only and seal the other end.
Discover PressurelessImportant: Maximum irrigation run lengths do not guarantee a specific water delivery rate. Different limits apply to winding or tightly curved installations. Several shorter runs with suitable supply lines may be more effective than one long hose. Follow the installation guidelines.
Step by Step
How to Install a Soaker Hose Along a Hedge Correctly
The hose layout must suit the rooted soil area and the width of the hedge. Straight sections and suitable supply lines make planning easier.
Measure the Hedge Length and Root Zone
Measure the planned hose route and check where the roots are located. For wide hedges, two irrigation lines or separate runs may be useful.
Plan Irrigation Runs and Supply Lines
Choose the product line and divide long distances into separate runs if necessary. An adequately sized supply line prevents unnecessary pressure losses.
Connect the Filter, Pressure Regulation and Hose
Install a suitable water filter. When using mains water or a pump, the operating pressure must match the product line. Seal the open end of the hose with an end plug.
Check Water Delivery and Cover the Hose
Test the system before covering it. Check the soil moisture at the beginning, middle and end of the hedge. If necessary, lightly cover the hose with soil or mulch.
Hydraulics and Accessories
Check Pressure and Water Flow Separately for Long Hedges
Water Pressure: The operating pressure at the hose must match the selected product line. A suitable pressure reducer may be required when using high mains water pressure or a pump. A flow restrictor does not replace pressure regulation.
Available Water Flow: Even with sufficiently high pressure, the water source may supply too little water for multiple irrigation runs operating simultaneously. Supply lines, filters, elevation differences and the number of open irrigation zones influence the actual flow rate.
Rainwater: With CS Pressureless, the height difference between the water level and the Soaker Hose is crucial. As the water level falls, the available pressure head decreases.
Irrigation Duration
How Long Should You Water a Hedge?
There is no universally suitable irrigation duration. Plant age, weather conditions, soil type, season, water delivery and installation method determine the actual requirements. Check the moisture in the root zone after the first irrigation cycles and adjust the duration accordingly.
Newly Planted Hedges
The roots have not yet spread very far. Check the soil particularly carefully and focus irrigation on the current root zone.
Established Hedges
Consider the more extensive root system. Depending on hedge width and soil type, the hose layout may need to be adjusted.
Dry Periods
Check soil moisture in several sections. Drought and high temperatures may require adjustments to irrigation.
Avoid Common Mistakes
Three Common Planning Mistakes When Irrigating Hedges
Individual Runs That Are Too Long
The permitted length depends on the product line and installation method. It is better to divide long hedges into suitable irrigation runs.
Confusing Pressure with Flow Rate
Sufficient pressure alone does not mean that all irrigation runs receive enough water. Both values must be checked separately.
Not Checking Water Delivery
An unsuitable hose layout or incorrect spacing can leave individual root zones with insufficient water. Test the system before covering it.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Hedge Irrigation
Can I Retrofit a Soaker Hose Along an Existing Hedge?
Yes. The hose can be installed along the hedge in the rooted soil area. Check whether one or more hose lines are appropriate for the hedge width.
Is a Single Soaker Hose Enough for a Long Hedge?
That depends on the product line, hose layout and water supply. With straight installation, Premium allows up to 75 m and Profi up to 100 m per run. For longer hedges, multiple irrigation runs should be considered.
Can I Install the Soaker Hose Under Bark Mulch?
Yes, with suitable installation, lightly covering the hose with bark mulch or soil is recommended. Avoid kinks and check water delivery before covering the hose.
Can I Water a Hedge with Rainwater Without a Pump?
This is possible with CS Pressureless if the water level is sufficiently higher than the Soaker Hose and the entire water supply system is suitable. For straight installation, the maximum irrigation run length is 25 m.
Do I Need a Pressure Reducer?
With a pressurized water supply, the operating pressure must remain within the permitted range of the product line used. A suitable pressure reducer is often advisable or necessary; a flow restrictor alone is not a substitute.
How Often Should I Water My Hedge?
This depends on soil moisture, weather conditions, plant size and stage of development. Check the moisture in the root zone and adjust irrigation intervals and duration accordingly.
