Irrigation for Raised Beds

Watering Raised Beds with a Soaker Hose

A CS Soaker Hose releases water along its porous hose wall. This allows it to deliver moisture directly to the soil around plants. Learn how to install the hose in a raised bed and which CS variant is suitable for your water source.

Understanding Irrigation

Why Is a Soaker Hose Useful in a Raised Bed?

Raised beds can lose moisture more quickly due to sunlight, wind and their exposed side walls. It is therefore important to use an irrigation method that matches the plants and their actual water requirements.

The Soaker Hose releases water close to the soil surface. Depending on soil structure, operating pressure and installation layout, the water can spread through the root zone without extensively wetting the leaves through overhead irrigation.

Which CS Soaker Hose Is Right for Your Raised Bed?

The right variant depends on more than just the size of the raised bed. Key factors include the water source, available pressure, water flow, hose layout and number of raised beds.

For Elevated Rain Barrels

CS Soaker Hose Pressureless

For a low-pressure water supply from a suitably positioned water storage container. An electric pump is not required if the water level and overall supply configuration provide sufficient pressure head.

Important: In an elevated raised bed, the water level must be higher than the Soaker Hose.

For Compact Garden Beds

CS Soaker Hose Startup

An entry-level solution for small and medium-sized raised beds where a suitable pressure-regulated water supply is available. The permitted irrigation run length depends on the installation method.

Different recommendations apply to installation around plants compared with straight runs.

Discover Startup

For Multiple Garden Beds

CS Soaker Hose Premium

For larger or multiple raised beds and adjacent planting areas with a planned water supply. Pressure, supply lines and potential pressure losses must be considered together.

Multiple raised beds may require separate irrigation runs with an appropriate water supply.

Choosing the Right Hose: The length of a purchased hose roll does not automatically correspond to the permitted length of an individual irrigation run. Follow the product-specific installation guidelines.

Hose Layout

How to Install a Soaker Hose Correctly in a Raised Bed

The hose layout should be based on plant positions, bed width and soil conditions. A single hose row is not automatically sufficient for the entire raised bed.

  1. Plan the Planting Areas

Mark the areas where plant roots need to receive water. In wider raised beds, several hose rows may be useful.

  2. Lay the Hose Without Kinks

Position the Soaker Hose along planting rows or in suitable curves. Follow the installation layout and irrigation run length specifications for the selected product line.

  3. Connect the Water Supply

Use suitable connectors and an appropriate filter. If the mains water pressure is too high, a pressure reducer matched to the product line is required. The open end of the hose must be sealed.

  4. Check Water Delivery

Check the connections and water discharge before covering the hose. Then monitor soil moisture in the root zone and adjust the irrigation duration and frequency accordingly.

Installation Depth and Spacing: There is no universal hose row spacing suitable for all raised beds. Soil type, planting arrangement and water delivery determine how many rows are appropriate. Depending on the application, a light covering of soil or mulch is possible.

Water Sources and Accessories

Water Raised Beds with a Rain Barrel or Mains Water?

Rain Barrel: With the CS Soaker Hose Pressureless, the required water supply is generated by a sufficient height difference between the water level and the hose. This height difference is particularly important for elevated raised beds. A tank positioned next to the raised bed is not always sufficient.

Mains Water: For Startup or Premium, the operating pressure must match the hose variant. A suitable pressure reducer may be necessary. Both water supply methods require sufficient water flow.

Practical Advice

Avoid Three Common Planning Mistakes

Focusing Only on Pressure

Suitable pressure alone does not guarantee that enough water flows through the supply line and filter. The available water flow is equally important.

Too Few Hose Rows

In wide raised beds, a single hose may not adequately reach all planting areas. Check soil moisture after irrigation.

Using Fixed Irrigation Times

A fixed number of minutes is not suitable for every raised bed. Plants, weather, soil conditions and actual water delivery determine the required duration.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ About Raised Bed Irrigation with a Soaker Hose

Can I Cover a Soaker Hose with Soil or Mulch in a Raised Bed?

Yes, depending on the product line and installation method, a light covering is possible. Make sure the hose is not sharply kinked or crushed, and check water delivery beforehand.

Is One Hose Row Enough for My Raised Bed?

That depends on the bed width, planting arrangement and soil conditions. Wide raised beds may require several parallel hose rows. The key factor is whether moisture reaches the soil around the roots.

Can I Water an Elevated Raised Bed with a Rain Barrel?

Yes, if the water level is sufficiently higher than the installed CS Soaker Hose Pressureless and the supply line delivers enough water. A rain barrel at the same height as or below the hose is often insufficient for gravity-fed operation.

Is Startup or Pressureless Better for a Raised Bed?

The water source is the main deciding factor: Pressureless for suitable gravity-fed systems with low inlet pressure, and Startup for appropriately pressure-regulated water supplies. Hose layout, irrigation run length and available water flow are also important.

Do I Need a Water Filter and a Pressure Reducer?

A suitable filter is recommended regardless of the water source. If the inlet pressure is too high, an appropriate pressure reducer is required for Startup or Premium. When using Pressureless with a rain barrel, the limited available inlet pressure is the main consideration.

How Long Should the Soaker Hose Run in a Raised Bed?

A fixed operating time is not generally advisable. Check soil moisture a few centimeters below the surface in the root zone and adjust the irrigation duration and frequency according to the plants, weather and actual water delivery.
