CS Water Filters for Soaker Hoses and Garden Irrigation

Water filters trap dirt particles before they enter the CS Soaker Hose. Here you can find out which filtration rating is suitable for tap water, rainwater and your irrigation system.

Water Quality and Operation

Why Is a Water Filter Useful for a Soaker Hose?

CS Soaker Hoses release water through their porous hose walls. If sand, dirt or deposits enter the system with the incoming water, they can impair water delivery. A suitable filter reduces this risk by trapping particles before they enter the hose.

The appropriate filtration solution depends on the water source, the type and quantity of particles, and the pressure and available water flow rate. A filter itself can cause pressure loss, particularly if its filter element is fine or dirty.

  • Trap particles before they enter the Soaker Hose
  • Match the filtration rating to water quality and supply conditions
  • Check and clean filters regularly
  • Select filters and pressure reducers according to their respective functions

Selection Guide

Which CS Water Filter Is Right for Your Water Source?

The micrometer rating indicates the filtration fineness: The smaller the value, the smaller the particles that the respective filter element is designed to retain. However, finer filtration often increases flow resistance.

Tap Water and Coarser Particles

125 µm

A compact solution for normal tap water, particularly when sand, rust particles or deposits may enter the system from older pipes. Also available in combination with a 1 bar pressure reducer.

For rain barrel operation, ensure low filter resistance and a suitable connection type.

Rainwater and Moderate Particle Contamination

60 or 50 µm

Polyester mesh filter elements for finer particle retention, for example from rain barrels or cisterns. A 50 µm filter provides finer filtration than a 60 µm filter. The appropriate version also depends on the required flow rate.

For heavily contaminated water, an upstream coarse filter may be useful.

Very Fine Particles, Sufficient Pressure

25 or 20 µm

Braided fine filter elements for suitable systems with sufficient inlet pressure, such as pump-operated systems. They can restrict water flow considerably more and should be protected by prefiltration when coarse dirt particles are present.

Not intended for pressureless gravity-fed irrigation.

Special Water Conditions

Iron and Limescale Filters

The CS product range includes special filter variants for water with elevated iron content or hardness. Their suitability depends on the actual water composition, filtration technology and operating conditions.

A standard particle filter does not automatically remove dissolved iron or dissolved limescale-forming minerals.

Product Range Overview

Direct Comparison of CS Filter Types

This overview summarizes typical functions. Availability, filter housings, connections and permissible pressure ratings depend on the respective product variant.

Filtration Ratings and Potential Applications of CS Water Filters
Filter TypeTypical ApplicationImportant Note
125 µmTap water, coarser particles, compact filtration solutionsAlso available with an integrated 1 bar pressure reducer
60 and 50 µmRainwater, cistern water, lightly to moderately contaminated waterPolyester mesh; consider filter resistance and the required water flow
25 and 20 µmFine particles in systems with sufficient inlet pressureBraided filter elements; not suitable for pressureless operation
Iron FilterFor water with elevated iron contentCheck suitability based on water quality and filter design
Limescale FilterFor increased water hardness, provided the variant is designed for this purposeNot every water filter provides a general water-softening effect

One micrometer (µm) equals 0,001 millimeters. The sizes “5 Zoll” and “10 Zoll” refer to the housing size or filter element length of the respective models, not the hose connection.

Installation and Maintenance

Proper Water Filtration in Four Steps

A water filter must be compatible with the system and maintained regularly. The appropriate installation point depends on the filter type, water source, pressure reducer and other components.

  1. Assess the Water Source

Check particle contamination, operating pressure, available flow rate and the number of irrigation runs operating simultaneously.

  2. Select the Filter

Match the filtration rating, housing size, connection and permissible pressure conditions to the system. Pay particular attention to low pressure loss in pressureless systems.

  3. Install Correctly

Install the filter upstream of the Soaker Hose. Observe the flow direction, seals, maintenance access and product-specific installation instructions; flush the lines before starting operation.

  4. Check Regularly

Clean or replace the filter element according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If water delivery decreases, check the filter, water supply, connections and entire irrigation run.

Technical Planning

What to Check Before Purchasing

Important Technical Features When Choosing a Water Filter
FeatureWhat to Consider
Filtration RatingDepending on the filter element, for example 125, 60, 50, 25 or 20 µm
Housing SizeCompact filter or housing for 5 Zoll or 10 Zoll filter elements, depending on the product
ConnectionsCheck product-specific hose connections and threads; not every model includes the same fittings
Water Pressure and Flow RateConsider filter resistance, contamination level and sufficient water supply for all irrigation runs
MaintenanceDepending on the design, backwashing, manual cleaning or replacement of the filter element
Pressure RegulationOnly with combination models specifically designed for this purpose, for example 125 µm with an integrated 1 bar pressure reducer

Specific flow capacities, maximum pressure ratings, connection sizes and replacement filters must be checked against the product description of the selected model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About CS Water Filters

Answers about water quality, filtration ratings, cleaning and pressure.

Is a Water Filter Useful Even with Tap Water?

Yes, particularly if rust particles, sand or deposits may enter the system from pipes. The filtration rating should match the particles actually present. A filter can reduce the risk of clogging but cannot eliminate every cause of impaired water delivery.

Which Filter Is Suitable for Rainwater from a Rain Barrel?

With a sufficiently pressurized water supply, a 60 µm filter is often a suitable option. For gravity-fed operation, particular attention must be paid to the available pressure and flow losses. The very fine 20 and 25 µm filter elements are not intended for this application.

Is 20 µm Automatically Better Than 60 µm?

No. A 20 µm filter element can trap smaller particles but often causes greater flow resistance and may become clogged more quickly. The right filter is one that adequately removes the relevant particles without excessively restricting the water supply.

When Should I Clean the Filter Element?

This depends on water quality, filter design and operating duration. Check the filter regularly and follow the cleaning instructions for the respective model. Inspection is advisable if the flow rate decreases or visible contamination occurs.

Can I Retrofit a Filter?

In many cases, yes. Suitable connections, an accessible installation location and sufficient remaining pressure and flow rate at the Soaker Hose are important. Flow direction and maintenance access must also be considered.

Can I Combine the Filter with a Pressure Reducer?

Yes, provided the filter and pressure reducer are suitable for the intended water flow path. Alternatively, a combination model with a 125 µm filter and 1 bar pressure reducer is available. Whether 1 bar is suitable for the respective CS Soaker Hose variant must be checked separately.
